Dan White was one of the many Supervisors within California, who assassinated both Harvey Milk, and Mayor George Moscone November 27th, 1978. On November 10th, 1978 White resigned his place as supervisor because he said he was dissatisfied with corruption within the workings of San Francisco city politics, and that he could not continue living on his annual salary of $9,600 because it was not enough to support his family. White received a call from a network asking for his statement because he wasn't getting re-appointed as supervisor. Then on November 27th, 1978 entered through a basement window that had been negligently left open for ventilation. White confronted Mayor Moscone about being re-appointed, Moscone refused to do so. White then shot Mayor Moscone four times before going to Milk's corridor and shooting him five times in City Hall. San Francisco's gay community was so crushed by the death of their hero and idol, Harvey Milk, that over 30,000 people attended a candle lighting ceremony in order to honor him. White immediately turned himself in at the San Francisco's Northern Police Station, confessing ,"I just shot him". In the court case White was charged with voluntary manslaughter, and there was a controversial phrase used called the "Twinkie defense". The "Twinkie defense" was used in White's defense that he had suffered from a diminished capacity as a result of his depression. A forensic psychiatrist, Martin Blinder, testified that White was suffering from depression and pointed out several behavioral symptoms. He later was sentenced to serve seven years at Soledad State Prison but was paroled two years early on January 7th, 1984. The California State Corrections Officials feared that White might have been murdered for his crime, therefore they transported him to Los Angeles where he served a year's parole. When he attempted to return to San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein issued a public statement formally asking White not to return, but he eventually did to rebuild his life with his family. Less than two years of White being released from prison he committed suicide after his marriage failed on October 21, 1985 by carbon monoxide poisoning. He was later buried at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in California, with a traditional government -furnished headstone for veterans.
